An exceptional experience

“When war strikes, it strikes everyone.”

An exceptional experience in a refugee camp for Ukrainians in Hamburg.

How do you use your 8 hours of volunteering best? Many little remote volunteerings or one day on-site?
Leyli decided to spend her volunteering hours from Hapag-Lloyd joining two different projects. First Hanseatic Help and then the refugee camp at Schnackenburgallee organized by DRK Hamburg Altona und Mitte e.V.

works at IT Marine Operations at Hapag-Lloyd, a transport and logistics company headquartered in Hamburg. “We support stowage planning application and its interfaces. We also provide EDI support related to stowage planning.
Spending a lot of time in front of a screen at work, Leyli decided to do some hands-on volunteering with purpozed.

It was important for Leyli not to spend her time in front of a screen, doing that during at her job already. Leyli wanted to do non-skills-based volunteering on-site. When it's difficult to find time for volunteering in your everyday life, it's great to have the chance to contribute with the “impact time” of your company.

For many organizations, it's hard to offer a one-time-volunteering when they are working with people in need. But Hanseatic Help found a perfect way - they offer very flexible volunteering to help in their storage and stores. Leyli enjoyed her time there: “They are very welcoming and I could combine it with donating clothes at the storage. You always meet new people, some are employees, some are volunteers.”

hanseatic_helpAbout Hanseatic Help
“Since 2015, we have been providing uncomplicated help in and around Hamburg, Germany and internationally with our non-profit organisation Hanseatic Help.
At our logistics location at Große Elbstraße 264, we accept clothing and hygiene donations, sort them and forward them as needed and free of charge to more than 300 facilities for people in need. In this way, we provide and support refugees and homeless people, families with low incomes, children's homes, women's shelters and social counselling centres with clothing and other articles of daily use. In cooperation with other aid organisations, we deliver relief goods that are not needed in the region to crisis regions such as Syria, Iraq and Ukraine. Since 2022, we have also been operating our own Hanseatic Help Stores - currently at three locations in Hamburg. HanseaticH_dvinci (13)
Anyone who needs pragmatic, unbureaucratic support is supplied by our social logistics. Countless people have already been provided with initial supplies and clothing and hygiene articles in this way. Our motto #einfachmachen is always in the focus - whether it's social donation logistics, social spaces or social integration.
Everyone can get involved with us. As a voluntary association, we are always happy to have a helping hand. We are well networked both regionally and nationally and know: Together we can achieve more.”

Social responsibility is more and more part of corporate identities these days. purpozed showed me the range of possibilities. You might know a few by yourself, but it's very convenient to have access to a platform with such a big variety. That's how I found DRK Hamburg Altona und Mitte e.V. and the refugee camp at Schnackenburgallee. It was super easy to get in touch with the organization via the chat on purpozed.“

The camp Schnackenburgallee is a “Erstaufnahmestelle” for refugees from Ukraine. After refugees have submitted an asylum application in Hamburg, they live in an initial reception center, called “Erstaufnahmestelle”. There they receive accommodation, food and medical assistance. Here you find more infos about it.

They are differently organized than Hanseatic Help and rely more on long-term volunteers. I was at the camp Schnackenburgallee to help at the post office. We sorted letters and when someone didn't pick up his*her post for more than one month we had to check the room, if the person is still living there and also talk to the neighbours to find out. There were so many people and it was hard to keep track of whether someone left or not. Because they need to register by arrival but not when they leave.

Schnackenburgallee

It was shocking for me to see all the people torn out of their lifes. I could relate to them very much because my grandma was born in Russia and lived in Ukraine. The war is horrible - it shows it can happen to everyone. When war strikes, it strikes everyone.

Through volunteering you contribute to a non-profit organization and their cause, but also the experience broadens your horizon and gives you the chance to have new social experiences. You see another reality than your own and as much as you share your time and knowledge, you learn yourself .

I wanted to help once monthly, but it was too little time, although they were really thankful for the help. I will go back to Hanseatic Help again.
Also, Leyli wanted to check out purpozed for further possibilities. Are you curious about the different ways of volunteering too? Have a look at purpozed or contact us - as a company or as a NPO.
